印仏とは、通常十二体で一つの版木を構成する手彫りのブロックプリントのことで、肉筆とは異なる味わいがあります。平安時代に多く造られた「千体仏」と同じように、ひとつの面にたくさんの小仏を造ることで功徳を得ようとしました。仏像の胎内から発見されたということも、１体の仏像造立に多くの功徳を求めて、納められたものと考えられています。
