The best way to to do this is by resting the fattest part of the rod grip on your index finger and seeing if the rod leans tip heavy or butt heavy. (Keep in mind that an empty reel will gain a slight bit of weight when you spool it with backing and fly line.) This balance game also comes down to personal preference, but it can be a helpful way to choose between different sizes
